Career Coach = Career Help => Career Change

Think about hiring a career coach when you need a little career help or you're contemplating a career change.

But what is a career coach and why would you need one?

Well, you've probably heard of vocational counselors or career development counselors, especially if you've ever been through a "downsizing" or "rightsizing" or whatever the current PC term is for getting pink slipped due to a change in company circumstances. Most companies—at least the large ones—provide them at such times.

Coaching—in contexts other than sports—is a newer term and profession today. But the role and the services offered when applied to careers is similar to yesterday's vocational counselor. A coach focuses on helping you figure out which path to take with your career and how best to get there. Coaching is all about empowering you to make changes in your life.

Did you know that people today can change careers more than 10 times during their lives? It's true, according to the US Department of Labor. So, chances are, you'll be changing careers one day soon too, if you're not already in the midst of such a change. You're here, aren't you? You might find a career coach to be helpful.

Career coaches are great because they can help you find the focus you've been missing, as well as give you that little extra career help—in the form of a push, if necessary—you may need to make the changes that you want to make in your job.

Signs That You Might Be Ready for a Career Coach

  • You're not sure which direction your career should be heading
  • You're not satisfied with where you are right now, or you're bored.
  • You want to advance in your current career, but you're not sure how to get there.
  • You're searching for work that you can be passionate about.

Those are just a few of the situations in which a career coach could be helpful. The main thing is that you have the right to do work that feels meaningful to you. After all, you spend more than one-third of your life at work. Shouldn't your work feel like a dream job to you?
